CASH FOR CLOTHES

Each spring and fall, dozens of community volunteers leap into action—as they have done since 1975—to collect, sort, and price clothing for the semiannual Cash for Clothes Sales, the major fundraising event for Coastal Opportunities. When the clothing is ready for display, more volunteers (along with Coastal Opportunities clients and staff) arrange everything in the American Legion Hall, at 91 Pearl Street in Camden. After that . . . let the shopping begin!

HOW IT WORKS
WANT TO DONATE CLOTHING? Put your excellent-condition Fall and Winter clothing in boxes or plastic bags and take it to the Corcoran Center (behind the Coastal Redemption Center) any weekday throughout the year between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. (Note: Any clothing brought in within two days of a sale will be held until the next sale.)

WANT TO CONSIGN CLOTHING? Pick up a registration number and price tags on a Pre-Registration Day (see Pre-Registration, above). Price items at home and take them to the Legion Hall on Receiving Day. You will receive half of the proceeds for any item sold on Saturday and Sunday. (After that, all items become the property of Coastal Opportunities, which receives all the Sale proceeds.)
WANT TO SHOP FOR GOOD USED CLOTHING (AND EVEN SOME NEW CLOTHING)? See the Sale Schedule, above.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN
In early 1975. Jean Boobar and Betty Frost (both board members of the Coastal Workshop, now Coastal Opportunities) called a meeting to discuss raising funds for the organization by selling used clothing. About twelve women of all ages—new mothers to grandmothers—listened, learned, laughed, and brainstormed, in the end giving birth to the plans for “Cash for Clothes.” Some of those same women have continued to be vital to the success of the dozens of semiannual sales since then, including Nancy Wolfertz, who has served as general co-chair of the project for two decades.

Over the years, the sale was held in several sites in Rockland and Rockport before landing in 1987 in its current location—Camden’s American Legion Hall, on Pearl Street.

Since 1975, Cash for Clothes Sales have provided hundreds of thousands of dollars to Coastal Opportunities, definitely a win/win/win story: Sellers clean out closets and usually earn some money, shoppers find remarkable bargains, and the participants of Coastal Opportunities benefit 100 percent from the proceeds.
